Clinical management of the interrelationship between diabetes and periodontitis: joint guidelines from the Brazilian Society of Periodontology (SOBRAPE) and the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabology (SBEM)

The clinical management of the interrelationship between diabetes and periodontitis is a challenge for all parties involved in health care.

The Brazilian Society of Periodontology (SOBRAPE) and the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabology (SBEM) have appointed specific committees to draw up joint guidelines addressing the interrelationship between diabetes and periodontitis.

Guidelines were drawn up for patients, doctors, dental surgeons and teams working in the Unified Health System.

The application of the guidelines can provide a more complete approach to the care of patients with diabetes and periodontitis, with a consequent improvement in quality of life, and an improvement in medical parameters, with a possible reduction in costs for all medical and dental activity.
